A 43-year-old cancer surgeon at Bronx hospital has won a lawsuit against a New York City cop for maltreating her. Dr. Rachel Wellner was sued by the New York Police Department for injuring Officer Niguel Vega with her car during a traffic stop in 2016. After the incident, she became a tabloid villain for making the statement “I’m the hero; the cops are not” at the site of the incident.
During the hearing, she pleaded guilty to violation of traffic laws and disorderly conduct filed against her by the New York Police Department. For this, she was sentenced to 10 days community service which she served picking trash at New York City Park Department after her arrest in 2016.
After that, she proceeded to sue the New York Police Department’s officer Niguel Vega for assaulting and maltreating her during the traffic stop. The verdict for her suit against the officer just ended in her favor with a compensation of $1.2 million as against the $30 million damages she filed. Why she was awarded $1.2 million damage compensation by the court is still unclear.
Responding to the victory, Jon Norinsberg, Wellner’s lawyer said they are happy the court saw the truth and ruled against the police force lies and deceptions.
Presently, Dr. Rachel Wellner’s lawsuit against the management of Bronx Hospital for terminating her appointment due to her arrest by the New York Police Department is still awaiting the jury’s verdict.
