This holiday,CDC (Centers for Disease Control) is warning people to stop eating any uncooked or raw cake mixes or cookie dough. The homemade dough contains eggs and raw flour that can lead to fatal life-threatening diseases. Flour is not treated to destroy germs like E. Coli and other germs that have harmful effects on people and can make them sick.
The CDC says that due to an outbreak of E. Coli infections associated with the raw flour sickened 63 individuals in 2016. When bloody diarrhea and severe stomach cramps are the symptoms of E. Coli infections. According to the CDC, in the U.S every year 30 people die due to E. coli infection.
The raw eggs used in making the batter can lead to ‘salmonella poisoning’, which can cause fever, diarrhea, along with abdominal cramps. Sometimes, it can also lead to fatal diseases. According to the CDC, in the U.S every year about 450 people die because of salmonella infections.
Cooking the eggs and flour properly destroys such contaminates and makes cookies, bread, pie crusts, cakes, and other baked stuff safe to consume. The Food and Drug Administration along with the CDC requests people to avoid using raw flour, instructing children not to consume raw flour, who might play with the raw dough or use it in arts and craft tasks. While baking also, the agencies urge to wash hands frequently when handling the raw ingredients.
