Turkish origin, German football player, Mesut Özil, ties the knot with model and actress, Amine Gülşe, last night. The ceremony took place in Bosporus in Istanbul. The event was attended by top businessmen and celebrities, but a certain “Best man” caused controversy amongst the general public especially in Germany.
Özil asked Turkish president, Tayyip Erdoğan, to be his best man on his wedding and Erdogan obliged. The couple had a shining wedding ceremony and even provided meals to 15,000 Syrian refugees via the Turkish Red Crescent. Özil’s wife was crowned Miss Turkey in 2014.
When Özil announced that Erdogan would be his best man, the German chancellor Angela Markel expressed criticism of the decision. She described the decision as “makes one sad”. Özil announced his resignation from the German team in 2016 claiming that the officials of the team are racist. He also stated that he was on the receiving end of hate mail due to being an immigrant and the officials did not take any action.
“I am German when we win, but I am an immigrant when we lose,” Özil said, he further stated that he no longer wants to wear the German Shirt while playing football.
He now plays for Arsenal and is a key player in the team.
