There are several articles on what is “flow”. But none of those really talk about how to effectively achieve it. Flow is a mental state described by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. It is a state in which people are so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter. Sometimes when people are so engrossed in what they are doing, the rest of the world seems to fade away. However, flow isn’t always easily achievable.
Here are a few simple tips shared by experts, many who also provide Flow State productivity coaching, that can help you achieve the highest mental state of productivity. The first thing is never to go hungry. When you are hungry, your mind is distracted. That does not mean you should snack or eat tons of junk food.
When you eat oil and sugar, before working, your energy levels come down. So watch what you eat and do not go hungry before working. The second tip is to cut out distractions. Before you start to focus on work, close the door, lock your phone away, put on noise cancellation earphones, and concentrate.
Sometimes distractions are inevitable, but do what you can do. The best technique to train your mind to achieve flow is the Pomodoro technique. In this technique, you can follow the 25:5 minutes rule. You can segment your time, work for 25 minutes, and then take a break for 5 minutes.
On days when you are not feeling productive, that’s the best way to go. The flow state of mind works well when you are focusing on a single task. So the next tip to follow is to not multitask. It may seem like a great idea, and you might think you will get a lot done by multitasking but that’s not true. That’s why undertake a single task but with laser-like focus.
